What is The Lightning Thief about?

Percy Jackson has dyslexia and ADHD and has been expelled from several schools, including Yancy Academy. On a class trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a teacher turns out to be a Fury, a servant of Hades, and attacks him. His teacher Mr. Brunner helps him fight her off. After Percy is expelled, a storm hits, his friend Grover urges him to reach Camp Half-Blood, and a monster attacks his mother, who vanishes in golden light.

Camp Half-Blood is a summer camp for the children of the Greek gods. Percy learns that he is the son of Poseidon, that his friend Annabeth Chase is the daughter of Athena, and that Grover is a satyr. Zeus's master bolt has been stolen, and Percy is accused of taking it. If it is not returned in time, a war among the gods will begin.

Who stole the lightning bolt?

Percy, Annabeth and Grover go to the Underworld to confront Hades, but Hades did not steal the bolt. His helm of darkness has also been taken. Percy defeats Ares in a fight on a beach in Santa Monica, the helm is returned to Hades, and the bolt turns up in Percy's backpack. He reaches Olympus and tells Zeus and Poseidon what he knows.

The real thief is Luke, Percy's friend at Camp Half-Blood, who serves Kronos, the Titan who plans to overthrow the gods. Ares, who wanted a war between the gods, had gone along with the plot. At the end of the summer Luke lures Percy into the woods, tries to kill him with a scorpion and escapes. Percy goes home to his mother in New York, knowing that greater threats are coming.
