Linked stories about the lives of a small Ohio town's residents

Winesburg, Ohio is a short story cycle of 22 stories. The first, "The Book of the Grotesque," serves as an introduction. The stories are linked by setting, recurring characters and mood, and the town is loosely based on Anderson's memories of Clyde, Ohio. George Willard, a young reporter for the Winesburg Eagle, appears in all but six, and his coming-of-age ends in the last story, "Departure." The stories first appeared in magazines in 1916 to 1918, and B. W. Huebsch published the book in 1919.
