A farmhouse that doubles as a way station for travelers between the stars

Galaxy Magazine serialized the novel in two parts in June and August 1963 under the title Here Gather the Stars, and Doubleday published it as Way Station the same year. Enoch Wallace, a Civil War veteran born in 1840, is recruited by an alien, whom he names Ulysses, to run an interstellar way station on his family farm. Decades later, the US government becomes aware of him and assigns a CIA agent to investigate.
