Putnam published the novel in June 1971. It was earlier serialized as two novellas in Worlds of Tomorrow, "The Day of the Great Shout" (January 1965) and "The Suicide Express" (March 1966). Humanity has been resurrected on the shores of a mysterious river that seems to extend endlessly, and Richard Francis Burton, the British adventurer, wakes there with other revived people and begins to explore.
