Science Fiction World serialized the novel in 2006, and Chongqing Press published it as a book in 2008. Tor Books and Head of Zeus published the English translation in 2014, 390 pages, translated by Ken Liu and Joel Martinsen. The English edition moved the chapters set during the Cultural Revolution to the opening; the author said they had been moved originally to avoid government censors. It centers on contact with an alien civilization from a system of three Sun-like stars. Netflix's 3 Body Problem premiered on 21 March 2024.
