Eighteen-year-old Blandine and her neighbors share a run-down building in an Indiana town

Blandine is eighteen and a former foster youth. She lives in La Lapiniere, a low-income housing complex in the fictional town of Vacca Vale, Indiana. Her neighbors include Joan, who works screening comments on an obituary website, and Hope, who is struggling with postpartum depression. Developers are planning a so-called revitalization of the area, and the novel moves between these lives over five parts and forty-two sections.
