An energy device called the Pump exchanges matter between our universe and a parallel one
by Isaac Asimov
Doubleday published the novel in May 1972, and its three parts had first appeared as consecutive stories in Galaxy and Worlds of If. They are set on Earth around 2093, on a planet in a parallel universe with different physical laws, and in a lunar colony. The plot centers on an energy device called the Pump, which exchanges matter between universes. The first edition has 288 pages.

Asimov took the title and the three-part structure from Friedrich Schiller's The Maid of Orleans. Odeen, Dua and Tritt are named from the Russian words for one, two and three. It was his first original science fiction novel in fifteen years.
