A spirit-child in a Nigerian town keeps being pulled back toward the world of spirits
by Ben Okri
Azaro is a spirit-child, born into a poor family in a Nigerian town, who keeps being called back to the spirit world. His father and mother struggle to survive while political unrest grows in the community. Okri was 32 when it won the 1991 Booker Prize, the youngest winner at that time.
Azaro, his parents, and the people of their neighbourhood.
A poor district of a Nigerian town, and the spirit world beside it.
It blends everyday life with a spirit world.
Dreamlike and vivid.
