A man who thinks of himself as a scientist records the halls and tides of an endless House

Piranesi lives in the House, a vast, seemingly endless building with countless halls and statues. Its upper levels hold clouds and its lower levels hold an ocean. He considers himself a scientist and records his observations of the House and its tides in daily journals. Twice a week he meets a well-dressed man called the Other, who asks for his help searching for a hidden "Great and Secret Knowledge." It is Clarke's second novel, after Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2004).
