A statistician's marriage and the First World War across four novels

Parade's End is made of four novels: Some Do Not (1924), No More Parades (1925), A Man Could Stand Up (1926) and Last Post (1928). They follow Christopher Tietjens, a brilliant government statistician from a wealthy landowning family, his flippant socialite wife Sylvia and the pacifist suffragist Valentine Wannop. The story begins in England before World War I and moves to the Western Front in France and Belgium. Last Post follows peacetime and postwar reconstruction.
