A gifted child is trained for a war against insectoid aliens

Tor Books published the novel in January 1985, expanded from a 1977 short story of the same name in Analog Science Fiction and Fact. The first edition runs to 324 pages. Humanity is at war with an insectoid alien species called the buggers, and Earth recruits gifted children and trains them as officers through increasingly difficult war games. Andrew "Ender" Wiggin is the central figure, with his siblings Peter and Valentine. A revised edition came out in 1991.
