Melody Beattie describes codependency and urges readers to put themselves first and set boundaries
Melody Beattie developed the concept of codependency while counseling the families and partners of people with substance abuse problems, including women whose husbands were in alcoholism treatment. The Hazelden Foundation first published the book in 1986. It urges readers to put themselves first, examine their upbringing and the models they may be following, set boundaries and decide what they want as individuals. A revised edition added new chapters on anxiety and trauma.
