Orbit published the novel on 1 October 2013. It is Leckie's debut and the first book of the Imperial Radch trilogy, followed by Ancillary Sword and Ancillary Mercy. It alternates between present-day events and flashbacks from 19 years earlier. The Radchaai do not distinguish people by gender, so Leckie uses she for everyone. Breq, Seivarden and Anaander Mianaai are the main characters. Adjoa Andoh read the audiobook.
