Marilynne Robinson was born in Sandpoint, Idaho. She took a BA at Pembroke College, Brown University, in 1966 and a PhD in English at the University of Washington in 1977.
She taught at the University of Iowa from 1991 to 2016. Alongside her novels she has published essay collections such as The Givenness of Things (2015), and she divides her time between northern California and upstate New York.
