Ellen Glasgow was born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1873. Poor health meant that she was educated at home, where she read widely in philosophy, social and political theory, and European and British literature.
She wrote twenty novels and is often credited with founding the realist movement in Southern literature. Her books include Barren Ground (1925), The Sheltered Life (1932) and In This Our Life (1941), which won the 1942 Pulitzer Prize. She died in Richmond in 1945.
