Caroline Pafford Miller was born in Waycross, Georgia, in 1903. Her debut novel, Lamb in His Bosom (Harper, 1933), drew on folktales and regional speech she gathered in rural south Georgia.
Her Pulitzer win prompted Macmillan to search for more Southern authors, which led to the discovery of Margaret Mitchell. She won the Prix Femina Americain in 1935 and published a second novel, Lebanon, in 1944. She was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2007, and she died in Waynesville, North Carolina, in 1992.
