Anthony Doerr was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He studied history at Bowdoin College and took an MFA at Bowling Green State University.
His first book, the story collection The Shell Collector, appeared in 2002. He was Writer in Residence for the state of Idaho from 2007 to 2010, writes a science-books column for The Boston Globe, and lives in Boise, Idaho.
